Jack and I drove up to Ohio Friday night and spent yesterday at the hospital with Mom. Jack just left to go back, I'm staying here.
Dad's surgery didn't go as well as hoped today. We had hoped the doctor would look at the spot all of the bad things were happening in, say "He's healed!", and schedule the plastic surgeon with a smile on his face.
Unfortunately, he found more dead tissue to clean out - tissue that was OK two days ago. :o( He cleaned it out again, taking more of the muscle. The good news is that the graft of the bypass looks great. It's healing well, and doing its job.
The plastic surgeon is coming in tomorrow to evaluate whether there is enough soft tissue left to cover it. If he finds more dead tissue, or the bypass has collapsed, or there isn't enough tissue to cover it, Dad will probably lose his left leg just above the knee. If they are able to save it, but what's left won't be very functional, the surgeon will let Dad make the decision on whether to keep it or take it.
One day at a time... that's all we can do...
